[영어표현 꿀팁/영문계약/법률영어] 영문 기간 표기하기

여러분 이번에는 기간을 표시하는 방법에 대해 알아볼게요. 

 

일상 회화라면, 아래 1. 부터 4. 까지 차례로 on/ from/ by/ from~to~ 등으로 간단하게 표시하면 될 텐데요. 

 

영문 계약의 경우, 분쟁을 미연에 방지하기 위해 보다 세심하게 표현할 필요가 있습니다. 아래 참고하세요. 

 

1. 특정 날짜 표현(~에): as of, on

This agreement is made and entered into as of/on September 1, 2020, by and between A and B.  

이 계약은 2020. 9. 1.에 A와 B사 사이에 체결되었다. 

 

 

 

 

2. ~로부터 

시작일을 포함하지 않는 경우	시작일을 포함하는 경우
from/after 날짜 (excluding/exclusive)	from/after 날짜 (including/inclusive) on and after 날짜 commencing on/with 날짜 starting on 날짜

* 9월 1일 다음날 부터 

from September 1, 2020 (excluding)

from September 1, 2020 (exclusive)

after September 1, 2020 (excluding)

after September 1, 2020 (exclusive)

*9월 1일 부터 

from September 1, 2020 (including)

from September 1, 2020 (inclusive)

after September 1, 2020 (including)

after September 1, 2020 (inclusive) 

on and after September 1, 2020

commencing on/with September 1, 2020

starting on September 1, 2020

 

참고: from은 시작일이 포함되고, after은 시작일이 포함되지 않는다고 알고 계실 수 있는데요. from, after을 쓰는 것만으로는 추후 위 용어 해석에 관한 다툼의 소지가 있을 수 있습니다. 따라서 excluding/exclusive/including/inclusive를 넣어서 표현을 좀더 명확하게 해주는 것이 좋습니다(만약 from, after만 있다면 알고 계신 대로 해석하면 되겠습니다).

 

 

 

 

3. ~까지

종료일을 포함하지 않는 경우	종료일을 포함하는 경우
by/before 날짜 (excluding/exclusive)	by/before 날짜(including/inclusive) on or before 날짜  ending on/with 날짜

*9월 30일 전날 까지 

by September 30, 2020 (excluding)

by September 30, 2020 (exclusive)

참고: by는 종료일이 포함되고, before은 종료일이 포함되지 않는다고 알고 계실 수 있는데요. by, before을 쓰는 것만으로는 "종료일 포함 여부"가 명확하게 해석되지 않을 수 있습니다. 따라서 2.와 마찬가지로 by/before 뒤에 excluding/exclusive/including/inclusive를 넣어서 표현을 좀 더 명확하게 해주는 것이 좋습니다(만약 by, before만 있다면 알고 계신 대로 해석하면 되겠습니다).

 

 

 

 

4. ~로부터 ~까지: 아래 

시작일/종료일을 포함하지 않는 경우	시작일/종료일을 포함하는 경우
from 시작일 to 종료일, both exclusive  시작일 through 종료일, both exclusive  between 시작일 and 종료일, both exclusive  from 시작일 through 종료일, both exclusive	from 시작일 to 종료일, both inclusive  시작일 through 종료일, both inclusive  between 시작일 and 종료일, both inclusive  from 시작일 through 종료일, both inclusive commencing on/with 시작일 and ending on/with 종료일 starting on 시작일 and ending on/with 종료일

*9월 1일 다음날 부터 10월 31일 전날까지 

from September 1 to October 31, both exclusive 

September 1 through October 31, both exclusive 

between September 1 and October 31, both exclusive 

from September 1 through October 31, both exclusive 

*9월 1일 부터 10월 31일까지 

from September 1 to October 31, both inclusive

September 1 through October 31, both inclusive

*9월 1일 부터 10월 31일 전날까지

from September 1 (inclusive) to October 31 (exclusive)

 

참고: 역시 2,3과 마찬가지입니다. from... to... 는 시작일/종료일이 포함되고, between... and... 는 시작일/종료일이 포함되지 않는다고 단정 짓기 어려우므로,  excluding/exclusive/including/inclusive 혹은 both exclusive, both inclusive와 같은 표현을 넣어 주세요(만약 from...to... 혹은 between... and...만 있다면 알고 계신 대로 해석하면 되겠습니다).
